Book ‘Em: Undereducated, Overincarcerated
This youth-created documentary features information about how the school-to-prison pipeline operates in public schools in Connecticut. The film was created by young people involved in a program by Youth Rights Media. Youth Rights Media is a New Haven-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth to know, protect and advance their rights. YRM builds youth power and leadership by engaging young people in video media production and community organizing, equipping them with tools, skills, and strategies for affecting change within themselves and their communities.
Breaking the Pipeline: A Film about the School to Prison Pipeline and Restorative Justice
The following is a PSA about the School-to-Prison Pipeline.
In 2007, NYCLU supported three groups of youth to produce their own documentaries about the school to prison pipeline.
Schoolhouse to Jailhouse was produced by Make the Road New York’s Youth Power Project. Youth at Make the Road New York, a Brooklyn community organization, discuss the School to Prison Pipeline and its impact on their lives. The film also tells the story of Luis, a young man suspended from school and questioned by officers from the local precinct for having a cell phone in his bag.
School: Where Safety is Nothing but A? was produced by Future of Tomorrow, a youth group in Brooklyn N.Y. Youth with Future of Tomorrow, a Brooklyn community organization, discuss the over-policing of their schools and propose a solution: student success centers. The youth discuss the problems with school safety in their schools and how their campaign for Student Success Centers will improve students’ school experiences.
Our Schools: Safe or Not? was created by Youth on the Move. Members of Youth on the Move, a Bronx community organization, document school safety measures in their schools. They surveyed and interviewed youth in their neighborhood, asking about school safety agents, permanent metal detectors and the overemphasis on discipline to the detriment of education. They also ask what students can do to improve the situation.
This video documentary was created in the summer of 2009 by nine high school students working with the Metropolitan Area Group for Igniting Civilization and exploring patterns of student arrests in the Chicago area.
