Brain Dead

Brain Dead will be our ongoing archive of zero tolerance policies run amok.  In particular, we will feature the most ridiculous examples of school suspensions and school-based arrests that we find.

Kick-Me Prank Gets Student Suspended

The classic schoolhouse prank of slapping a “kick me” sign on a classmate’s back is no joke at one Upper East Side school, where the city’s zero-tolerance anti-bullying policy was strictly enforced against a 9-year-old boy.

The fourth-grader was spotted sticking a yellow Post-it inviting “Kick me, please” on another little boy’s backside on Jan. 25.

But instead of getting banished to the corner for a timeout, the PS 158 prankster was bounced from the classroom for two days, The Post has learned.

The boy’s mom fumed that the old-school gag was just “playing around” — but a parent who asked to remain anonymous called the Post-it “maliciousness — it’s not kid’s play.”

The stunning response to the taunt was a foregone conclusion, given that city schools formally banned bullying in 2008.

“School authorities might not have the leeway to do things differently,” said Richard Gallagher, the director of the Parenting Institute at NYU’s Child Studies Center.

“We have to be very careful about zero tolerance and how it gets implemented,” he said. “Teasing behaviors are pretty typical. But the boundary between teasing and bullying is different.”

Upper East Side psychologist Dr. Joshua Rosenthal said the Columbine massacre in 1999 scared educators.

“It was a wake-up call as to what bullying can lead to . . . in extreme cases,” he said.

The little boy’s behavior triggered a stern warning to the boy’s parents by school Principal Darryl Alhadeff.

“This incident is in violation of the Discipline Code and is classified as ‘infraction A37’ — engaging in bullying behavior — and will result in a Principal’s Suspension for a period of two days,” he wrote.

A Department of Education spokeswoman said the kick-me caper was “just the latest incident between the students. The principal followed procedure, held parent conferences and offered counseling.”

Crime of the century? Some of the PS 158 kids think not.

“[He] was probably teasing” his victim, one pug-nosed fourth-grader said in the Yorkville schoolyard yesterday.

“[The boy] either teases you or he tells you he’s going to start hitting you, but never does.”

Threatened with Suspension for Wearing a Justin Bieber T-Shirt:

Four teen girls from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, NY who have a strong case of “Bieber-fever”, were told to take off their homemade “Bieber Krew” tees by school security.

The reason?

The T-shirts (see pics) were considered “gang-related” and the students were threatened with school suspension.

More specifically, the Roosevelt HS principal got together with the 4 girls, their parents and security and said the shirts were “inappropriate for school because they were gang-related”.

Wow. First Brazilian police find a mural of the teen idol on the wall of a drug kingpins home in Rio de Janeiro, now Bieber T-shirts are considered gang-related.

And of course it wasn’t long ago when he hit a cop with a water balloon .

That Bieber is so dangerous…

Two 12 year olds are arrested on charges of possession of prescription drugs. From the article:

Prescott police arrested two Granite Mountain Middle School students Tuesday on charges including possession of prescription pills after one student told officers he found the prescription pills in his garage and brought them to school to sell.

A 12-year-old boy was booked into juvenile detention on charges of selling and possession of prescription pills in a drug-free school zone.

A 12-year-old girl was charged with buying and possession of prescription pills in a drug-free school zone.

Both were also given out-of-school suspensions, according to the police report.

When police met with an administrator, she told the officer there were five students in her office with their parents ready to be interviewed and handed him a bottle of prescription ranitidine (Zantac) allegedly found in another girl’s backpack, and $5 found in the 12-year-old boy’s pocket, according to the police report.

The 12-year-old boy’s father told the officer he recognized the prescription bottle as one he accidentally left in his truck and later in his garage after helping a neighbor move years ago.

The boy told the officer he sold the pills in the seventh grade hall at school to the 12-year-old girl for $5, according to the police report.

Ohio Student Sent Home for Not Wearing Ohio State or Michigan Shirt

TOLEDO, Ohio – For many sports fans around the area the Ohio State-Michigan game is the biggest game of the week, but not for a girl in Toledo.

She is a Notre Dame fan and that caused her some trouble at Wait High School this week.

Lacy Cornett’s high school sent her home her for refusing to take off a Notre Dame shirt.

Lacy wore it to school during a spirit day designed to honor the Buckeyes-Wolverines football game.

The freshman said the assistant principal told her to either take off the shirt and go back to class or leave it on and spend the day in an in-school suspension.

Her parents removed her from school.

“I told her if she has a problem she should call my parents and she wrote me up and sent me to the dean,” Lacy said. “I don’t agree with them making somebody that doesn’t like Ohio State or Michigan take off a shirt because they want to support their team.”

The school district said on top of refusing to wear a Michigan or Ohio State shirt, the freshman was late to school on spirit day.
